Summer is the perfect time to strengthen skills, build confidence, and keep kids engaged in learning.
Our Summer Reading Programs give students the tools they need to catch up, keep up, or get ahead before the next school year begins.
Summer Reading Matters
Without support, many children experience the “summer slide” — a loss of academic progress during the break. For students with dyslexia or other reading challenges, that slide can be even greater.
Our programs are designed to:
- Prevent regression over the summer months
- Strengthen reading, writing, and spelling skills
- Build confidence and independence
- Prepare students for a strong start in the fall
What We Offer
Each summer, ETC hosts a variety of programs to meet different needs. Past events have included:
Intensive Reading Programs
Small groups and one-on-one sessions using the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
Skills Workshops
Focused on phonics, fluency, comprehension, and spelling.
Parent Information Nights
Helping families learn how to support literacy at home.
Community Literacy Events
Bringing families together to celebrate learning.
Program Details
Who: Students in grades K–12 who struggle with reading, spelling, or comprehension.
Where: ETC centers in Parkville and Overland Park (virtual options available).
When: Programs typically run June through August.
Format: Flexible scheduling with one-on-one tutoring or small group sessions.
Approach: Structured Literacy with multisensory instruction (Orton-Gillingham).
Beyond Summer: ETC Events
Learning doesn’t stop in the summer. Throughout the year, we also host:
- Parent workshops on dyslexia and advocacy
- Tutor training & professional development
- Community awareness events in partnership with local organizations
