One-on-One Tutoring

This website has text to speech.

Every child learns differently. That’s why our tutoring is one-on-one, individualized, and research-based. We don’t believe in quick fixes; we believe in lasting results.

Why One-on-One Tutoring Works

Group programs can leave struggling readers behind. With one-on-one tutoring:

  • Your child gets the full attention of a trained tutor.
  • Every session is built around your child’s unique strengths and needs.

Progress happens step by step and at a pace that is “as fast as we can, but as slow as we must.”

Our Teaching Approach

We use the Orton-Gillingham Approach, a proven method for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. Lessons are:

Multisensory

Students see, hear, touch, and move while learning.

Structured

Skills are taught in a logical sequence, building on what’s already learned.

Explicit

Nothing is assumed; each rule and concept is directly taught.

Individualized

Adapted for your child’s learning style and pace.

How Tutoring Works

  • Sessions: 45–60 minutes each
  • Frequency: 2–3 times per week
  • Format: In-person at our Parkville or Overland Park centers, or virtual if appropriate

Duration: Most students work with us for about 2 years, though the timeline varies by child.

Tutors focus on building mastery in:

  • Reading fluency and comprehension
  • Spelling and writing skills
  • Vocabulary and phonics knowledge
  • Confidence and independence as a learner

Who Will Work with My Child?

Our tutors are highly trained professionals who complete:

  • 40+ hours of Orton-Gillingham training
  • 20 practicum hours with a master teacher
  • Ongoing professional development throughout the year

Many are also parents, educators, or specialists who understand the challenges families face.

What Parent’s Say

“Education Therapy Center has been just what my son needed to help with his dyslexia. His tutor, Sarah, has been fantastic! She makes their time together fun, encouraging and challenging. We’ve been meeting two times a week for just under a year now and have seen significant improvements in my son’s reading and confidence in school.”

Lasting Results

Our tutoring isn’t about short-term fixes. It’s about:

  • Helping students read, write, and spell with confidence
  • Building skills they will use for a lifetime of learning
  • Giving families hope, support, and a clear path forward
