READING COMPREHENSION

pinkGirlWhat is reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension is the ability to understand the ideas and facts presented in a text. Comprehension skills are the ability to use context and prior knowledge to aid reading and to make sense of what one reads and hears.

Did You Know?

Without proper interventions, 74% of the children who are poor readers in 3rd grade remain poor readers in the 9th grade.

Success in school and beyond depends in great measure upon the ability to read with good comprehension.

Reading comprehension improves when children are taught strategies such as determining the main idea, sequencing events and drawing inferences.

Lack of fluency decreases reading comprehension.
