A hands on demonstration of teaching these vital phonics elements of reading and spelling.
Learning the sounds of the letters in our alphabet is one of the first steps in learning to read. Discrimination of the vowel sounds can be difficult for some learners. Participants will learn activities for helping students master the different short vowel sounds. In addition to the short vowel sounds, learn how to guide your students toward selecting which letter combinations to use among the various choices for long vowels. Hands-on activities and reference charts will help guide our activities.
A hands-on workshop presented by an experienced classroom teacher using multi-sensory methods to teach the rules of spelling.
Did you know there are several rules for explaining why we read and spell many words the way we do? Participants will learn the basic rules that govern much of what we read and write. Do you know why “cat” is spelled with a ‘c’ but kitten is spelled with a ‘k?’ Do you know why “truck” ends with ‘ck’ but “trunk” ends with ‘k?’ Help your students unlock the codes that will help them gain confidence in their decoding and encoding skills.
An experienced classroom teacher will incorporate techniques found useful in effective structured literacy instruction for all.
Longer words do not need to feel like an insurmountable obstacle for your students. When your readers and spellers learn ways to break down words into smaller more manageable chunks, they will be able to attack words with multiple syllables. Using friendly animal names as guides, your students will learn the basic rules for dividing words into syllables. This skill will allow your students to decode words more easily for greater fluency, and to spell multi-syllable words with greater confidence.
